As the years go by, our bodies change. An annoying change can be the addition of varicose and spider veins. They are unpleasant to the eye and can also be painful. According to the Chicago Vein Institute “More that 40 Million people in the United States suffer from varicose veins.” It is estimated that 50% of the US population over 50 years old has varicose and spider veins.
“Varicose veins are twisted, enlarged veins near the surface of the skin” Pregnancy, being overweight, and jobs requiring a lot of standing can increase the development of these veins. They can cause burning and pain in the legs. In extreme situations, they can cause leg swelling and skin changes that include thinning and inflammation.
“Spider veins are smaller, red, purple, and blue vessels that are also twisted and turning” These veins can also be visible on the chest and face.
There are many procedures to help with varicose and spider vein problems. Pricey creams, treatments, and doctor visits may not be an option for all. In both treatment and prevention, the more circulation you get to the legs the better. Nothing is a cure-all and always consult a doctor if the condition worsens.
There are easy steps to take to help with this problem.
#1. Flat Heels
When picking out shoes, stick to flats. Heels higher than 3 centimeters promote bad circulation that can cause vein damage.
#2. Elevate Feet
Elevate feet above the heart. This helps decrease pressure in the legs which is a cause of varicose and spider veins.
#3. Compression Stockings
Compression stockings have been shown to be very effective at battling varicose and spider veins. These stockings help improve circulation when one does not have the time to keep their feet up. They also come in many colors!
#4. Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is an excellent remedy for these veins. Try placing a soaked gauze or cloth on the affected area for 20-30 minutes. Apple cider helps by improving blood circulation and decreasing swelling.
#5. Cold Showers
Cold showers are a quick and easy remedy. The cold constricts the veins and can cause relief from pain.
#6. Don’t Cross Legs
When one crosses their legs, circulation is decreased significantly. Try and remember to sit with your legs uncrossed and that will help.
#7. Loose Fitting Clothes
Wearing loose fitting clothes promote great circulation. Tight jeans restrict blood movement and may even cause varicose and spider veins to worsen.
#8. No Alcohol or Smoking
Avoid alcohol and quit smoking. Smoking can decrease circulation while alcohol dilutes blood vessels.
#9. Exercise
“Women with a BMI greater than 30 are three times as likely to develop varicose veins.” Watching one’s weight and getting regular exercise can lower their chances of developing this disease.
#10. Spicy Food
Spicy foods are actually great when fighting varicose and spider veins. Spicy foods have been shown to increase circulation. Enjoy your cayenne pepper, onions, and garlic while knowing they are fighting for you.
With these quick tips be happy to know that your future years can still be incredible!
